눈이 쌓이지 않는 마법의 도시
A magical city where snow never piles up

서울에는 아무리 눈이 많이 와도 눈이 쌓이지 않는 마법의 도로가 있습니다. 
There are magical roads in Seoul where snow does not pile up no matter how much it snows.

서울시가 도로에 열선을 설치해 눈이 오더라도 모두 녹일 수 있도록 했기 때문입니다. 
This is because the city of Seoul installed heating wires on the roads so that even if it snows, it can all melt.

열선은 빙판길에서 차량과 보행자가 미끄러지지 않도록 합니다. 
The heating wire prevents vehicles and pedestrians from slipping on icy roads.

도로 포장면 5~7cm 아래에 설치된 열선이 지표면을 데웁니다. 
A heating wire installed 5 to 7 cm below the road pavement heats the ground surface.

현재까지 서울시에는 총 419개의 열선이 설치되어 한파 속 시민들의 안전을 지키고 있습니다. 
To date, a total of 419 heating wires have been installed in Seoul to ensure the safety of citizens during the cold wave.

배경지식 Background

① 한국에 열선이 꼭 필요한 이유
: 한국은 산이 많은 지형이라 곳곳에 언덕이 많습니다. 한국의 72%는 산으로 이루어져 있습니다. 따라서 경사가 진 도로에 눈이 쌓이면 자동차나 보행자의 사고 위험이 커질 수밖에 없습니다. 도로 열선이 한국의 시민들에게 환영받고 있는 이유이기도 합니다.

① Why heating wires are essential in Korea
: Korea has a mountainous terrain, so there are many hills here and there. 72% of Korea is made up of mountains. Therefore, if snow accumulates on a sloping road, the risk of accidents for cars or pedestrians inevitably increases. This is also why road heating wires are welcomed by Korean citizens.

② 열선은 어떻게 작동하나요?
: 열선은 온도와 습도를 감지할 수 있습니다. 따라서 도로 표면의 온도가 2도 이하로 떨어지고 비나 눈이 감지될 때 작동합니다. 열선이 작동하면 도로 표면의 온도가 5~10도까지 올라가 눈을 녹입니다.

② How does the heating wire work?
: The heating wire can detect temperature and humidity. It therefore activates when the road surface temperature drops below 2 degrees and rain or snow is detected. When the heating wire is activated, the temperature of the road surface rises by 5 to 10 degrees and melts the snow.
