한국은 매해 12월 31일 밤 12시 전 국민이 함께 지켜보는 행사를 진행합니다. 
Korea holds an event that all citizens watch together at 12 p.m. on December 31 every year.

서울시 종로구에 위치한 보신각에서 울리는 33번의 종소리를 TV 등을 통해 지켜보는 겁니다. 
It is to watch the bell ringing 33 times at Bosingak, located in Jongno-gu, Seoul, on TV.

33번 종을 울리는 것은 불교 문화의 영향으로 과거를 정리하고 새로운 한 해동안 좋은 일이 있기를 기원하는 의미입니다.
Ringing the bell 33 times is influenced by Buddhist culture and it means putting an end to the past and wishing for good things in the new year.

보신각을 방문하면 현장에서도 종소리를 들을 수 있습니다. 
When you visit Bosingak, you can hear the bell ringing on site.

서울시는 현장을 방문하는 시민들이 안전하게 귀가할 수 있도록 2024년 1월 1일 새벽 2시까지 대중교통을 연장 운행한다고 밝혔습니다. 
The Seoul City announced that public transportation will be extended until 2 a.m. on January 1, 2024 to ensure that citizens visiting the site can return home safely.

배경지식 Background

① 보신각은 무엇인가요?
: ‘보신각종’이라는 이름의 종을 걸어놓기 위해 만든 기념물입니다. 조선 건국 초기에 만들어졌으나 전쟁으로 사라졌다 다시 만들어졌습니다. 현재는 새해를 맞아 종을 울리는 행사를 진행하는 장소로 알려져 있습니다.

① What is Bosingak?
: This is a monument created to hang a bell named ‘Bosingakjong’. It was created in the early days of the Joseon Dynasty, but was lost during the war and rebuilt. Currently, it is known as a place where bell-ringing ceremonies are held to welcome the New Year.

② 한국의 종
: 한국은 불교 문화의 영향을 받아 종 문화가 깊게 발전했습니다. 시간을 알리는 기능에서 종이 쓰이기도 했지만 종교적인 의미를 가졌기 때문입니다. 사람들은 종소리를 들으며 고민을 없애고 명상을 했습니다.

: Korea has deeply developed a bell culture under the influence of Buddhist culture. Although bells were used to tell time, they also had a religious meaning. People listened to the sound of the bell to relieve their worries and meditate.
