“꼼짝마” 한국에서 머그샷 공개한다
“Don’t move” Mugshots to be released in Korea

한국에서 중대한 범죄를 저지른 피의자들을 대상으로 ‘머그샷’이 공개됩니다.
‘Mug shots’ will be released for suspects who have committed serious crimes in Korea.

머그샷이란 피의자의 검거 당시 모습을 보여주는 사진으로 얼굴의 정면과 측면 사진이 포함됩니다.
A mugshot is a photo showing the suspect at the time of arrest and includes front and side photos of the face.

지금까지는 특정한 강력 범죄나 성폭력 범죄의 경우에만 머그샷이 공개되었으나 그 범위가 확대된 것입니다.
Until now, mugshots have been released only for certain violent or sexual crimes, but the scope has expanded.

또 피의자가 동의한 경우에만 머그샷이 공개될 수 있었으나 앞으로는 피의자의 동의 없이 공개됩니다.
Additionally, mugshots could only be released if the suspect consented, but in the future, they will be released without the suspect's consent.

변경되는 법안은 다가오는 25일부터 시행됩니다.
The changed law will take effect from the 25th.

배경지식 Background

① ‘머그샷’ 왜 공개하나?
: 지금까지 한국에서는 특정 범죄를 제외하고 피의자의 증명사진 등 머그샷이 아닌 사진이 공개되었어요. 그런데 피의자의 사진이 지나치게 보정이 되어 있거나 실물과 달라 대중들이 피의자를 알아보기 힘들었어요. 그래서 머그샷이 필요하다는 여론이 생겨났고 이번에 법안이 바뀌게 되었답니다.

① Why are ‘mug shots’ made public?
: Until now, in Korea, except for certain crimes, photos other than mugshots, such as ID photos of suspects, have been released. However, the photos of the suspect were overly edited or different from the actual person, making it difficult for the public to recognize the suspect. So public opinion arose that mug shots were necessary, and the bill was changed this time.
