한국에 방문한 외국인들 중 유독 적은 쓰레기통에 당황하는 경우가 종종 있습니다.
Foreigners visiting Korea are often thrown off by the particularly small number of trash cans.

서울시는 1995년 7,607개였던 서울의 쓰레기통을 점차 줄이기 시작했고 2022년에는 4,956개까지 줄어들었습니다.
Seoul City began to gradually reduce the number of trash cans in Seoul, which was 7,607 in 1995, and decreased to 4,956 in 2022.

당시 무분별한 쓰레기 투기가 심각한 사회문제가 되면서 정부는 쓰레기를 종량제 봉투에 담아 사용하도록 했습니다.

배경지식 Background

① 쓰레기 종량제는 뭘까요?
: 쓰레기 배출하기 위해 지불해야 하는 가격이 쓰레기의 양에 비례한다는 의미로 쓰레기를 배출하는 사람이 비용을 부담하도록 하는 정책입니다. 한국에서는 1995년 1월부터 시행됐습니다. 정해진 봉투에 넣지 않고 버리는 쓰레기는 수거해 가지 않고 무단으로 버리다 적발될 경우 100만원의 과태료를 물어야 합니다.

① What's the volume-based garbage system?
: It is a policy that requires the person who discharges the waste to bear the cost, meaning that the price to be paid to discharge the waste is proportional to the amount of waste. It has been in effect in Korea since January 1995. If you are caught throwing away trash without putting it in a designated bag, you will have to pay a fine of 1 million won.

② 다시 늘리는 쓰레기통
: 서울시는 쓰레기통이 부족하다는 시민들의 의견을 수렴해 현재 다시 쓰레기통을 늘리기로 결정했습니다. 올해 연말까지는 5500개로 늘리고 이후 2024년에는 6500개, 2025년에는 7500개까지 늘린다는 계획입니다.

② Number of trash cans increased again
: Seoul City decided to increase the number of trash cans again after collecting opinions from citizens that there is a shortage of trash cans. The plan is to increase it to 5,500 by the end of this year, and then to 6,500 in 2024 and 7,500 in 2025.
