배경지식 Background

① 왜 한국에서는 남자만 군대를 가나요?

: 한국의 헌법상 모든 국민은 국방의 의무를 다해야 합니다. 다만 국방의 의무 중 병역법에 따른 병역의 의무는 한국의 남성만 해당합니다. 여성의 경우 지원하여 현역 군인이나 예비역으로만 병역 활동을 할 수 있습니다.

① Why do only men serve in the military in Korea?

: According to the Constitution of Korea, all citizens must fulfill their national defense duties. However, among the national defense obligations, mandatory military service under the Military Service Act applies only to Korean men. Women can only apply for military service as active-duty soldiers or reserve soldiers.

② BTS, 군 면제 해줘야 하나? 말아야 하나?

: BTS 멤버들의 의사와는 무관하게 한국 정치권에서는 세계적인 아이돌의 군 면제 허용과 관련해 논란이 있었습니다. 현행법상 남자 선수들이 국제 대회에서 메달을 딴 경우 병역의 의무가 면제됩니다. 국제 사회에 한국을 알리는 기여를 했기 때문입니다. 한국 정치권 일부는 세계적인 아이돌 역시 이들 못지 않게 한국을 알리는 등 국가적인 기여를 이루었다고 인정해줘야 한다고 주장했습니다.

② Should BTS be exempted from military service? Should not?

: Regardless of the wishes of BTS members, there was controversy in Korean politics regarding allowing global idols to be exempt from military service. Under current law, male athletes are exempt from military service if they win a medal at an international competition. This is because it has contributed to promoting Korea to the international community. Some Korean politicians argued that world-renowned idols should be recognized as having made national contributions by promoting Korea.
