벌금 받은 한국 경찰에 ‘시끌’
‘Controversy’ over Korean police receiving fines

한국 경찰 2명이 벌금을 받은 사건과 관련해 논란이 일고 있습니다. 
There is controversy rising about an incident in which two Korean police officers were fined.

경찰관이 집 앞까지 데려다 준 취객이 추운 날씨에 숨진 탓입니다. 
This is because a drunk person whom the police officer brought to the front of his house died due to the cold weather.

지난 2022년 11월 해당 경찰관들은 취객을 집 앞까지 데려다줬으나 집 안으로 들어가는 것을 확인하지 않고 현장을 떠났습니다. 
In November 2022, the police officers brought a drunk person to the front of his house, but left the scene without confirming that he entered the house.

추운 날씨로 인해 6시간 뒤 취객은 숨진채 발견되었고 경찰은 구호 조치를 제대로 하지 않았다는 이유로 벌금형을 받았습니다. 
The drunk person was found dead six hours later due to the cold weather, and the police were fined for not providing proper relief measures.

이에 경찰이 집 앞까지 데려다 준 것으로 충분한 것 아니냐는 여론과 날씨와 상황을 고려할 때 집 안까지 들어가는 것을 확인했어야 한다는 여론이 대립하고 있습니다.

① 여론? 무슨 말이야?
: 한자어로 만들어진 단어가 많은 한국어! ‘여론’이라는 말도 두 개의 한자어가 만난 단어입니다.

: Korean has many words made from Hanja(Chinese characters)! The word ‘YeoRon’ is a combination of two Hanja.

여기서 ‘여’는 수레를 뜻하는 한자어 여(輿), ‘론’은 의견, 논의를 뜻하는 론(論)입니다. 
Here, ‘Yeo’ is the Hanja Yeo (輿), meaning cart, and ‘Ron’ is Ron (論), meaning opinion or discussion.

수레를 의미한다는 게 이상하지 않나요? 과거에는 가마나 수레를 끄는 사람들이 있었죠? 한 사람이 아니고 여러 사람이 수레를 끌 수밖에 없습니다. 따라서 과거에는 수레를 끄는 여러 사람들의 말이 대중들의 의견을 반영하는 것으로 생각했다고 해요. 그래서 ‘여론’이라는 말이 생겼답니다.
