Why Seoul Apartment Names Became Long

서울의 아파트 이름이 길어지면서 시민들의 불편함이 커지고 있습니다. 
As the names of apartments in Seoul become longer, the inconvenience to citizens is increasing.

서울의 한 아파트 이름은 ‘항동 중흥에스클래스 베르테카운티’로 총 15글자입니다. 
The name of an apartment in Seoul is ‘Hangdong Jungheung S-Class Verte County’, which is a total of 15 characters.

이처럼 최근 서울의 아파트 이름이 길어지면서 외우기 어렵고 복잡해서 불편하다는 서울시민들의 불만이 이어지고 있습니다. 
As the name of apartments in Seoul has been lengthened recently, Seoul citizens’ complaints continue that it is difficult to memorize and inconvenient because it is complicated.

서울시에 따르면 한국의 아파트 이름의 평균 글자수가 1990년대에는 4.2자였는데 2000년대에는 6.1자로 늘었습니다. 
According to Seoul City, the average number of characters for apartment names in Korea was 4.2 characters in the 1990s, but increased to 6.1 characters in the 2000s.

2019년에는 9.84자까지 길어졌습니다. 
In 2019, it was lengthened to 9.84 characters.

현재 한국에서 가장 긴 아파트 이름은 ‘광주전남 공동혁신도시 빛가람 대방엘리움 로얄카운티’로 25자입니다.
Currently, the longest apartment name in Korea is ‘Gwangju-Jeonnam Joint Innovation City Bitgaram Daebang Elium Royal County’, which is 25 characters long.

이에 서울시는 외국어 사용을 자제하고 10자 수준으로 글자 수를 준수해달라고 건설사에 요청했습니다. 
In response, Seoul City requestedconstruction companies to refrain from using foreign languages and comply with the number of characters at the level of 10 characters.

배경지식 Background

① 아파트 이름 왜 길어졌을까?
: 아파트 이름을 외국어로 짓거나 어렵게 지으면 프리미엄 이미지가 생긴다고 판단한 건설사들 때문입니다. 서울의 한 아파트 ‘래미안 목동 아델리체’의 경우 독일어로 귀족(Adel)이라는 단어에 영어로 소중히 여긴다는 의미의 Cherish를 결합해 ‘Adeliche’라는 아파트 이름을 지어내기도 했습니다. 

① Why did the apartment name become longer?
: This is because construction companies decided that naming apartments in foreign or difficult names would create a premium image. In the case of an apartment complex in Seoul, ‘Raemian Mokdong Adeliche’, the name ‘Adeliche’ was created by combining the German word for nobility (Adel) with the English word Cherish, meaning cherished.
