Korean New Year starts now

한국이 전통적인 의미의 새해를 맞이합니다. 
Korea greets the traditional sense of New Year.

한국은 음력으로 새로운 해의 첫날을 기념하는 날을 ‘설날’이라고 부르며 가족들이 함께 시간을 보냅니다. 
In Korea, the day to celebrate the first day of the new year according to the lunar calendar is called ‘Seolnal’ and families spend time together.

이번 설날은 2월 10일로 이 날이 음력으로 2024년 1월 1일입니다. 
This Seolnal falls on February 10th, which is January 1st, 2024 according to the lunar calendar.

한국인들은 설날에 떡국을 먹고 새해 인사를 나눕니다. 
Koreans eat rice cake soup on Seolnal and share New Year's greetings.

많은 한국인들이 고향을 방문하면서 분주한 시기가 되기도 합니다. 
It is also a busy time for many Koreans to visit their hometowns.

이번 설날의 연휴는 2월 9일 금요일부터 2월 12일 월요일까지입니다.

배경지식 Background

① 떡국의 의미
: 한국인들은 새해 첫 날에 떡국을 먹습니다. 떡국의 떡이 기다란 가래떡을 썰어 만드는데요. 가래떡처럼 오래 살라는 의미를 가지고 있습니다. 그래서 한국인들은 나이가 드는 것을 떡국을 먹는 것에 비유하기도 합니다. “내가 너보다 떡국을 많이 먹었다”라는 말은 “내가 너보다 나이가 많다”라는 의미입니다. 

① The meaning of Tteokguk (rice cake soup)
: Koreans eat Tteokguk on the first day of the new year. Tteokguk’s rice cakes are made by cutting long rice cakes. It has the meaning of long living like the rice cake. That's why Koreans compare growing older to eating Tteokguk. “I ate more Tteokguk than you” has a meaning of “I am older than you.”
