Private BTS “Salute”

BTS의 멤버 RM과 뷔가 이등병으로 진급했습니다. 
BTS members RM and V were promoted to private.

한국 육군에 따르면 RM과 뷔는 육군훈련소에서 5주 동안 기초 군사 훈련을 마치고 수료했습니다. 
According to the South Korean Army, RM and V completed five weeks of basic military training at the Korea Army Training Center.

두 사람은 200명 중에 5명만 해당되는 최정예 훈련병으로 선발되기도 했습니다. 
The two were also selected as the most elite trainees, which only apply to five out of 200.

RM은 자원해서 영상으로 이등병 진급 소감을 밝히며 앞으로도 최선을 다하겠다고 전했습니다. 
RM volunteered to express his feelings about the promotion to private through a video and said he would do his best in the future.

2022년 12월 BTS의 진이 가장 먼저 입대했고 현재는 BTS 멤버 전원이 병역 의무를 이행하고 있습니다. 
In December 2022, BTS's Jin was the first to join the army, and now all BTS members are fulfilling their military service obligations.

알쏭달쏭 한국어 Puzzling Korean

① 따르면?
: 다른 사람의 말을 인용할 때 한국에서는 ‘~에 따르면’이라고 말합니다. 한국어 ‘따르다’는 앞서 있는 것의 뒤를 쫓아가다는 의미입니다. 그래서 앞서 누군가가 한 말을 뒤에서 쫓아간다는 의미에서 인용할 때 ‘~에 따르면’이라고 하는 겁니다. 

① According to?
: When quoting someone else’s words, in Korea we say ‘~에 따르면 (Tta-Reu-Myeon)’. The Korean word ‘따르다’ means to follow what is ahead. So, when quoting in the sense of following up on what someone said earlier, we say ‘따르면’.

: 한국의 건강한 남성들은 육군, 해병, 해군, 공군 중 한 곳에서 병역 의무를 이행해야 합니다. 하지만 군대의 종류별로 의무 기간이 다르답니다.

② 한국 군대의 진급 체계
: 한국 남성들이 군대에 입대하게 되면 여러 훈련을 받는 훈련병 기간을 거칩니다. 이후 이등병, 일병, 상병, 병장을 거쳐 군대 기간을 모두 마치게 됩니다. 

② Korean military promotion system
: When Korean men join the military, they go through a training period that undergoes various training as trainees. After that, they complete their military service after serving as private, private first class, corporal, and sergeant.
